Becky had raced home. She wanted to tell her father everything. She barged through the front door and then raced over to his study. She knew that was where he spent all his time.

“Where have you been?” her father scolded her as she crashed through the door. “It’s 1 o’clock in the morning.” He thumped his desk in anger. “How am I supposed to figure out this secret with you coming and going at all hours of the night?”

Becky glared at him. Then she twirled on her heels and marched out of the office.

“You’ll not want to hear my news then,” she called back over her shoulder.

“Hold it right there!”

Becky stopped and turned back to look at her father. “Yes?”

Her father sighed.

“Okay, spit it out. What do you know?”

Becky walked slowly back into the room. As she did so, her sleeve rubbed on the door of a cabinet, coming away covered in dust. Her father really was disgusting, she thought. All he cared about was this ‘secret’. Why couldn’t he care about her as much?

“I went back to the old house. The two girls were there. Lauren — that’s the new girl — her locket was glowing.”

Becky’s father stared at her, his eyes narrowing in thought.

“Did you see it glow?” he asked her. Suddenly, he marched over to her, and grabbed her arm, shaking her roughly. “I want you to be truthful or you’ll be sorry.”

Becky eyed her father, tears welling in her eyes. She wiggled frantically and finally struggled free. After she backed away from him, she wiped her eyes, determined not to show that she was upset; that she cared. “Yes, I did. I promise.”

Then she twirled on her heels and sprinted from the room.

Her father watched her flapping heels for a second before turning to his desk. Walking over to it, he picked up a crumpled-up scrap of paper. He read it thoughtfully.
